Raqs Sharqi

In Turkey it is known as Oryantal Tansi and in Arab countries as Raqs Sharqi - translation, Oriental Dance. The French, during their occupation period of Egypt (1798 - 1801), called it "la danse du ventre", meaning "dance of the stomach".The misnomer was later translated into English as "Belly dance" by American promoter Sol Bloom. Sol was the Entertainment Director of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. He used the term as an advertising hook to draw visitors to an exhibit called "The Streets of Cairo" that featured snake charmers, camel rides and dancers. At the time, society considered any description of the body to be socially unacceptable and Sol knew the term Belly dance would scandalize interest and ultimately increase his business. Along with the sensational label, barkers at the exhibit would hype the dance show by calling out outrageous lines like "every fiber and tissue in her entire anatomy shakes like a jar of jelly from your grandmother's thanksgiving dinner..." etc. They even went so far as to prohibit women from viewing the show, to further shock and titillate the public.Today, in the Near and Middle East, the dance continues to be referred to as Oriental dance. However, outside of those regions you will find different labels attached to the art form. It is called, among other things, Middle Eastern, Mid Eastern, Mid Eastern Oriental, Near Eastern, Oryantal tansi, Raqs sharqi, Oriental, Belly and Belly dance.Legitimate points exist in support of, or opposition to, a particular label. Examples include but are not exclusive to:The desire to create a positive connotation with the term Belly dance by "honoring the abdomen as the center from which new life emerges". The term Belly Dance perpetuates a promoter's description founded in "racism, colonialism, and mid-Victorian Orientalist misconception". Society has a preconceived notion of the term Belly Dance, a notion not based in knowledge but in media stereotyping, imagination, or misinformation. Middle Eastern Dance designates a cultural and geographical area the general public can readily identify. Oriental dance is a folk dance belonging to a specific ethnic group. It is the artist's obligation to label the dance as that ethnic group labels it.When considering labels, weigh the fusion factor. Many artists blend flamenco, jazz, ballet, or African movements with Oriental dance. In those cases, it is no longer purely Oriental dance. Perhaps a label that reflects the multi-cultural forms of movement should be used. With an informed perspective, you can share what the dance is called in the Middle East, where the term Belly Dance came from, and why you choose to call it what you do. Knowledge reshapes perception, bringing society's notion from "dance of seduction" to "family oriented art form".

U.S. Passport RFID Already Hacked

Well that didn't take long. It's been roughly a whole month since the U.S. has been issuing passports with RFID chips in them, and already they've been hacked. In theory, at least.

The hack was released late last week and is now making the rounds. For a first stab at a hack, it is still on the limited side and is nothing to panic too heavily over. The hacker needs certain "seed" information in order to read all the data on the passport, including: Your passport number, your date of birth, and the date the passport expires. Using that information, anyone can obtain some of the digitally encoded data on the passport, including the digital image of your face and some personal information (it's not clear exactly what).

At first glance this doesn't sound so bad: Obtaining someone's date of birth is easy, but their passport and expiration date much less so. Still, all a hacker needs is a quick photo of that info or, more realistically, a simple method to intelligently brute-force-attack the passport in order to get the data.

More importantly, though, this is just the first passport crack in what will undoubtedly be a long line of them, culminating with a one-click method to crack any passport there is. For now, there's just the one: RFIDIOt, and the code is online for all to see. Hang in there, folks.

James, $11

James, $11
What’s better than a cocktail? How about one that’s discounted? Head to J Bar’s Stiletto night on Wednesdays, when women get $1 off the cost of their cocktails for every inch of their pumps (more info at metromix.com). We suggest you stop in this lounge at the swanky James Hotel and sample their signature libation made with Stoli Razberi, and elderflower and lime juices, served in a martini glass coated in a hard raspberry candy drizzle. We’ll have to pull out our four-inch heels just so we can have a couple of these puppies at a lower price.

Britney, Kevin mingle as singles

Britney Spears and Kevin Federline aren't going to let a divorce squabble curb their fun out in public. Both were out on the town Wednesday night, showing off happy, relieved faces.
Spears, who has been photographed at several outings in New York this week, stopped by the Sony Music Studios at 1 a.m. Thursday sporting a black micro-mini dress and what appeared to be a wedding band.

Federline, 28, took the stage at Chicago's House of Blues to announce, "You know who's about to be a free man, right?" His left ring finger was bare.

On Tuesday, Spears, 24, filed for divorce after two years of marriage. Wednesday, Federline filed divorce papers, too. Both want legal custody of their sons, 13-month-old Sean Preston and 8-week-old Jayden James.

As Federline struggles with his musical aspirations — album sales are low and tickets to his shows are being given away — Spears is making clear career moves:

•She has been working in the studio since the Sept. 12 birth of son Jayden James.

•She has announced an album due next year.

•She was photographed Tuesday night ice skating at Rockefeller Center with Larry Rudolph, her former manager and the man responsible for launching the teen sensation's career. They parted ways in 2004, shortly before Spears and Federline were married.

"She's still incredibly young, and her peers from the teen pop days (Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake) have been mostly successful. I think she can easily make a record that people want to hear," says Craig Marks, editor of Blender magazine. "With less baggage and less jokes being made about her, she can concentrate on her music."

More Stripping Lessons By Rihanna

Is Rihanna contemplating a career change? After seeing these concert pictures, I’m left wondering if she’s more interested in singing or stripping. She’s definitely got the onstage simulated sex acts down pat. For example we have the reverse cowgirl, the spread eagle, the doggy style and whatever the hell you call this one. Yup, it looks like Rihanna has passed Stripper Basics 101. Now quit teasing and get naked!

Lohan

Take a beautiful young lady, highlight her perfect face, then suggest that your product is somehow responsible and you have created yet another Proactiv anti-acne message for commercial television.

Actress Lindsay Lohan is the most recent celebrity spokesperson to sign a multi-million dollar deal to promote the Proactiv product line. Lohan falls right in the group of other such "lookers" as Jessica Simpson, Elle Macpherson, and Kelly Clarkson.

The traditional ad formula will involve Lohan sharing her own acne experience, whatever that may have once consisted of, and the fact that with Proactiv her face is now drop dead gorgeous.
